This week’s selection is actually 2 songs… the first song started as a cool riff from our bass player, Joe Theiler. (If you’ve been to our shows lately, you’re probably wondering… what happened to Joe?? He’s taking a break from the band because of work obligations and to spend more time with his family. We’re hoping he’ll join us again for some shows in the new year. Miss you, Joe!) The riff became an instrumental song and it needed a name. Since Joe came up with the idea and all of us (including our former drummer, Reid Trawick xoxo) were big fans of the movie “Say Anything”, we started calling it “Joe Lies” in honor of the song written by Lili Taylor’s character in the movie. I thought it sounded like the perfect intro for another song, so I wrote “Say Anything” using some references from the movie (“65 songs… all about pain” – remember that line?). With the title as inspiration, it morphed into a song about a singer/songwriter friend of mine who writes the most beautiful love songs but is actually in a miserable and abusive relationship. Not the most uplifting song, right? But sometimes you gotta write a sad one. Click HERE for “Joe Lies” and click again HERE for “Say Anything” and let me know what you think.
